GAJMUKTA – A rare, ancient elephant pearl.

Gajmukta

A Gajmukta is a greenish-brown, oval anatomical structure that has a mouth or pipe depending on how one interprets it. It is said to have magical and medicinal properties. It’s a form of pearl found in one in a million elephants. If studied in minutely and in detail, one finds it to be a natural, antique article based on its reactions when exposed to certain materials. Extremely rare and hence expensive, they are supposed to bring great fortune to the owner of such a pearl. They are considered priceless treasures, and usually only gifted by tribal chieftains, or accidently found deep in the jungles.

Is it alive?

Experiments have been done to find out whether it is actually a supernatural-living thing or not and surprisingly, the results were fascinating.

• When a “Paan Patta” or (Beatle leaf) is wrapped around the Gajmukta, after a while the leaf appears to have tiny bits of it eaten as if pricked by a pin.
  This is a “Paan Patta”, also used for many other religious ceremonies in India.

• If the Gajmukta is put into clean water, the water turns milky.
• When tested with a stethoscope, heart beat can be heard; if the Gajmukta is held in hand, little vibrations can be felt.
• When kept in Coconut water, bubbles are produced and the quantity of water decreases eventually.
• If the Gajmukta is put on a “Paan Patta”, placed on “Rayee” (substance used in Indian traditional food for making it spicy, for ex. In pickles), it (Gajmukta) immediately starts vibrating.

Advantages

The Gajmukta has many medical advantages and has the ability to cure many diseases like joint pains, inability to produce child in both men and women. Research shows that other than these two, it helps in spiritual healing and relieves one from stress. Also, it is considered to bring fortune to whoever possesses it.

According to Chandigarh Tribune’s article, a very well-liked and reliable newspaper in India, Gajmukta is an

“Enigma in mystery”, “…‘gaj mukta’ or ‘gaj moti’, a three-inch long and six-inch in diameter cylindrical object, which he claims is found in the forehead of an elephant. The ‘gaj mukta’, it is believed, is found in one in a lakh elephants and is known for its aphrodisiac qualities. Just as snakes are sought after for ‘mani’ and musk deer for ‘musk’ (kasturi), the ‘gaj moti’ is obtained from an elephant.This egg-shaped black object has been examined by various geologists, but it remains a mystery. When shaken, it seems that it is filled with fluid…”
